Eastern Michigan University

Founded in 1849 as the Michigan State Normal School, it was the fourth normal school (teachers’ college) established in the United States and the first American normal school founded outside New England. In 1899, the Michigan State Normal School became the first normal school in the nation to offer a four-year curriculum and gained the name Michigan State Normal College. In 1959, the college became a university and gained its current name of Eastern Michigan University.

Eligibility Criteria

To be considered for the Presidential Scholarship at EMU, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a high school senior graduating in 2026 or 2027
  • Have a 3.5 cumulative GPA and a composite ACT score of 26 or a combined SAT score of 1200 (Critical Reading + Math).
  • SAT/ACT requirements are waived for students with a GPA of 3.85 or higher.
  • You can apply for admission to Eastern Michigan University and submit all official transcripts and test scores by the scholarship deadline.

Deadline for Presidential Scholarships

The Fall 2026 Presidential Scholarship application deadline is now over. For applicants in Fall 2027, the application will reopen in Fall 2026.

Mark these important dates on your calendar to ensure a successful application process:

  • December 13, 2026: Deadline to submit all application materials and complete the campus visit.
  • All official admission documents must also be submitted to EMU by this date.
  • January 2027: Notification date for students moving on to the second round.
  • February 2027: Finalist interviews. Selected finalists will be invited to campus for an in-person interview or a virtual interview if they reside a substantial distance from Michigan.
