Details of the Government of Mexico Excellence Scholarships for International Students

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), through the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), invites foreigners interested in studying in Mexico at the specialty, master’s, doctoral, and postgraduate research levels, as well as undergraduate and graduate student mobility programs, to participate in the “Call for Scholarships of Excellence of the Government of Mexico for Foreigners.”

The Call is open to more than 180 nations through bilateral agreements, multilateral procedures, and special arrangements. More than 80 Mexican Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) are participating in this Call, with all of them having academic programs registered in the National Graduate System of the National Council of Science and Technology. These programs demonstrate the country’s progress in several fields of science and the humanities.

The Government of Mexico upholds its commitment to fostering cooperative measures that advance the development of top-tier human capital by offering Scholarships of Excellence to international students, thereby reinforcing its position as a globally responsible player.

Benefits of the Government of Mexico Excellence Scholarships

The following are the benefits of the Government of Mexico Excellence Scholarships:

  • A monthly stipend of four times the monthly value of the Federal Economic Measurement Unit (UMA), currently equal to$13,202.12 (thirteen thousand two hundred two pesos and 12/100 M.N.) per month, is awarded for master’s scholarships, mobility at the bachelor’s and master’s levels, and master’s level research. The UMA is subject to legislatively mandated modifications. The stipend is paid the month after.
  • Currently, the monthly stipend for doctoral scholarships and research stays at the doctorate and postdoctoral levels is $16,502.65 (sixteen thousand five hundred and two pesos 65/100), which is five times the monthly value of the UMA. The UMA is subject to legislatively mandated modifications. The stipend is paid the month after.
  • Enrollment and tuition, as per each Mexican educational institution’s program specifications.
  • The Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) offers health insurance. The coverage will start in the seventh month of the scholarship and continue for a length of time comparable to the allotted scholarship duration.
  • The Mexican visa is issued without payment.
  • International air travel after successfully completing the course of study.
  • Transportation Nationwide. Transportation from Mexico City to the host city of the receiving academic institution and back to Mexico City upon the conclusion of the scholarship period with a satisfactory academic record are covered if the studies are conducted outside of the city.
  • AMEXCID will buy the airline ticket in all relevant situations; refunds will not be given for individual purchases.

Ineligibility

The Following candidates are ineligible for Government of Mexico Excellence Scholarships:

  • Foreign diplomats with diplomatic status in Mexico, together with their immediate relatives.
  • International visitors who DO NOT hold a temporary student residence permit remain in Mexico.
  • Foreign individuals of Mexican descent, encompassing offspring of Mexican parents.
  • Foreign nationals who currently possess or are pursuing a Mexican family unity visa.
  • Applicants who were awarded a scholarship by any Federal Government institution the year before.
  • If you received a scholarship from a Mexican government agency.
  • Past AMEXCID grantees who submitted an application for a scholarship if the same number of months had passed since the benefits were awarded.

Required Documents

In addition to the following, kindly include any academic papers pertaining to the studies or research that needs to be done:

  1. A copy of a current passport with the applicant’s details on it.
  2. The applicant’s signed declaration letter
  3. A word processor-filled Curriculum Vitae, no more than four pages, signed by the candidate
  4. A copy of a medical certificate attesting to the applicant’s good health that was provided by a public or private healthcare facility and dated no more than three (3) months before the application submission. It must be supplied with a certified translation if it is written in a language other than Spanish.
  5. Acceptance letter from the receiving Mexican university with the start and end dates of the studies, and a GPA of 85 (on a scale of 0 to 100 or 8.5 on a scale of 10) that corresponds to the Mexican educational system, no later than 60 calendar days after the letter is issued.

Timeline

The SIGCA portal will remain open to receive applications from May 16, starting at 6:00 PM, until June 28, 2024, at 3:00 PM Central Mexico time.

Application Procedure

The following guidelines must be followed by all applications, along with the papers and related formats mentioned in this call for applications:

Applications must adhere to the stipulations set forth in this Call, including the required documents and corresponding formats, as outlined in the following terms:

  • Applications will be received electronically through the Sistema de Gestión de Cooperación Académica (SIGCA) (https://sigca.sre.gob.mx) during the application period.
  • Applications must be submitted in Spanish.
  • The SIGCA portal will remain open to receive applications from May 16, starting at 6:00 PM, until June 28, 2024, at 3:00 PM Central Mexico time.
  • Applications are made individually, and only one application per person will be accepted.
  • Applicants with more than one nationality may submit only one application, which must correspond to one of the eligible countries listed in this Call. The application must be submitted according to the nationality with which the applicant will be accredited.
  • Only applications requesting a scholarship within the academic offerings listed in this Call will be evaluated.
