Eligibility Criteria for the American Fulbright Scholarship for International Students
• Applicants must be citizens or relatives of the United States of America at the time of application. Permanent citizens are not eligible. Please read the Price Description in relation to dual citizen eligibility.
• Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree or equivalent before starting the grant.
• In the field of fine and performing arts, four years of professional training and/or knowledge meet the basic qualification requirement.
• Applicants must meet the language requirements of the award they are applying for and demonstrate sufficient ability to complete their project and acclimate to life in the host country.
• Applicants may have a J.D. at the time of application.
• Physicians may receive advanced fellowships, but not internships or residencies. M.D. scholars who have completed their formal graduate training and propose to be sent to a hospital or clinic for independent or collaborative research should apply to the U.S. Fulbright Program. Scholar. Grants do not qualify for work where a medical or nursing license is required. The Fulbright Program cannot approve medical research proposals that involve clinical training, patient care, or patient contact.

Preferred Qualifications
• Preference will be given to applicants whose higher education is offered primarily at educational institutions in the United States. A higher education experience abroad, whether in the chosen country or elsewhere, will not be considered bad.
• Students who are non-resident or illiterate in the country where they are applying for more than six months are selected, except for undergraduate courses. Foreign service in the armed forces of the United States shall not be deemed ineligible within the meaning of this section.
• Consumers who have served in the United States Armed Forces will be selected first, provided their qualifications are the same as other candidates.
• In most programs, applicants who have recent international experience in the host country are at risk of competition but are still eligible to apply.
