In order to focus on the creativity, ideas, and innovation that are emerging across the continent, including sustainability, the project aims to move beyond stereotypes of Africa as a continent with limited resources. The PhD will concentrate on collecting fresh data on fashion economies that are important to business and continue concept development on leading companies in the global South.

African Fashion Scholarships Award Value

For four years, the following are covered by the studentship:

  • Tuition fees at the higher international/overseas rate;
  • A living allowance (stipend) paid annually at the UKRI rate, which was set at £19,688 last year.
  • Research expenses can reach £5,000 annually.

Eligibility criteria

All of the following candidates are eligible to apply for African Fashion Scholarships at King’s College London for African Students:

  • African citizens who have a permanent address in an African nation;
  • Plan to start King’s College London’s full-time MPhil/PhD program in the academic year 2023–2024 (ideally, candidates would start in October 2023 but no later than January 2024).
  • satisfy the academic prerequisites for admission to King’s College London’s Faculty of Social Science and Policy’s PhD program.
  • In any subject, you should possess or anticipate obtaining High Merit or Distinction at the Master’s level (or equivalent).
  • International political economy, political economy, fashion management, business, development studies, culture, media & creative industries, policy, sociology, geography, and social sciences are among the disciplinary areas of particular relevance.
  • a strong academic, professional, and personal interest in fashion and the creative economy.

Application Process

Pre-selection based on documentation will be part of the selection procedure. Before applying through the KCL portal, please email Drs. Ikpe (Ekaette.ikpe@kcl.ac.uk) and Lauren England: (lauren.2.england@kcl.ac.uk) the aforementioned documents. If chosen, an invitation to an interview will come next. If the interview goes well, a scholarship and funding for PhD study will be offered. The chosen applicants must then submit an online application through King’s Apply.
