The AU EGL scholarship is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study, provided that the recipient maintains satisfactory academic standing. Interested students can apply to any major offered by AU.

The American University is a private research university located in Washington, D.C. The majority of its 90-acre main campus is situated on Ward Circle in the Spring Valley neighborhood of Northwest Washington, D.C.
Benefits of the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship
The AU EGL scholarship covers all of an international student’s billable AU expenses, including tuition, room, and board. To study in the US, the student must have a non-immigrant visa, preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa. The scholarship does not cover non-billable charges, such as mandatory health insurance, books, flights, taxes, and other expenses, which come to roughly US$4,000 per year.
Eligibility Criteria AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship
The candidates must fulfill the following criteria to apply for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship:
- International students who have overcome a range of obstacles in addition to those from diverse and underrepresented socioeconomic backgrounds and locations.
- For the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, preference will be given to:
- For grades nine through twelve, a minimum GPA is equivalent to 3.8 (or ranking in the top 10% of the graduating class).
- A history of community service, leadership, voluntarism, and support for the needs of their own people.
- Students who possess any of the following: 95+ TOEFL iBT (all subscores must be 20 or above); subscores of 24+ on the paper-based TOEFL; 7.0+ IELTS (all subscores must be 6.0 or above); a minimum SAT Reading Subscore of 33; a minimum ACT English score of 29; a minimum PTE of 65; 120+ Duolingo (all subscores must be 110 or above); or a minimum Cambridge Assessment English score of 185 or higher. For each, a sub-score of 169 or higher is necessary.
- Students enrolled in secondary or high school will graduate by June 2025.
- It is the goal of IB students to receive a full IB diploma, which must include at least three HL topics. Students enrolled in the British A-Level system are required to complete 13 years of study and at least 3 A levels by August 2025.
You are NOT eligible to apply if:
- You may be a citizen of the United States, a permanent resident of the United States, a citizen of the United States and another nation, or a dual citizen.
- You are a student at another university in your native country or the US, or you have already started any post-secondary education there.
- You completed your secondary education before 2023.
AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship Deadline
December December 1, 2024, is the deadline for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship along with the Common or Coalition Application and foreign admissions. AU EGLS applicants need to submit a Regular Decision application for the fall of 2025 (August). Use Early Decision (ED) sparingly.
AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship Application Procedure
To apply for the AU Emerging Global Leader Scholarship, candidates should follow the steps given below:
- Complete the AU EGLS application online;
- Provide proof that you have at least $4,000 in US dollars in both the AU Certification of Finances (AU CFIS) form and a bank letter. You can use your Future Eagle Portal to upload these or fax them to +1-202-885-1025. The AU CFIS form sample and bank letter samples
- Your official test results from the TOEFL, IELTS, Cambridge Assessment English exam, Duolingo English, PTE, or other exams must be submitted by December 1, 2024, at the latest. Kindly forward the official English proficiency score reports to the American University, Undergraduate Admissions, Washington, District of Columbia, via the testing company. Keep in mind that students are not allowed to turn in their own results.
- The completed Common Application or Coalition Application, together with the necessary supporting paperwork, must be submitted by the AU EGLS priority deadline of December 1, 2024.
- If you are applying through one of EducationUSA’s funded programs, or if you have already been awarded a FLEX or YES high school scholarship by the U.S. Department of State, please enclose a letter from the adviser of your EducationUSA center attesting to your eligibility. You can request to have a copy of the letter sent to levinson@american.edu in PDF format.
- You may be eligible for partial merit scholarships and still be accepted to American University in Washington, DC, even if your name isn’t selected as one of the finalists. However, to proceed with the application process, you will need to submit evidence of funds totaling US$78,296 (estimated costs for the first year of study).
