The Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship at the University of Newcastle, Australia is available to applicants from a range of academic subjects and is intended to provide funding for initiatives that improve knowledge and cross-disciplinary collaboration. The following candidates are not eligible to apply for the Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship in Multiple Disciplines:
- Applicants residing in Australia at the time of application or thereafter are not eligible to apply for this award.
- Dual citizens of the United States and Australia are not eligible to apply for this award.

Scholarship Length and Period
In order to participate in the orientation program and the gala presentation dinner in February, grants must begin in January or February 2025, in accordance with the Australian academic year.

University of Newcastle Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship Coverage
The Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship at the University of Newcastle Australia offers the following financial and supporting benefits to the scholars:
- AUD$3,500 (approx. US$2,300) per month for a maximum of 10 months
- Return economy class airfare direct to and from the scholar’s home city and the city of the host institution up to a maximum limit of AUD 4,000 (approximately US$2,869)
- A maximum of AUD$ 4,000 (around USD$ 2,700) (round-trip, economy class airfare) may be spent on travel between the scholar’s hometown and the city of the host institution.
Additional Dependent Benefits
Scholars may earn a one-time dependent allowance of AUD$3,200 (about USD$2,100) for one dependent or AUD$5,000 (roughly USD$3,300) for two or more dependents if they accompany qualified dependents for at least 80% of the program’s duration.
Special Award Benefits
- All Scholars’ transportation and lodging expenses for the yearly Gala Presentation Dinner and Orientation Program.
- American Fulbrighters in Australia are given access to the National Health Care Cover Scheme (Medicare).

Qualification
The Ph.D. must be attained by the planned start date of the award and is open to applicants who have earned their doctorate within the last five years, with more recently earned degrees favored.
Fulbright Postdoctoral Scholarship Application Procedure

- Project Statement: Your opportunity to describe your intended project and unique candidate characteristics to reviewers and potential hosts is provided through the project statement.
- CV/Resume: There must be a curriculum vitae or resume with every application. It should be well-structured and customized for the award you’re looking for.
- Letters of Recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are needed for the application. Letters of recommendation analyze your professional performance, including the skills and knowledge you bring to the project, your adaptability, the project’s benefits, and, if relevant, your efficacy in teaching or conducting research.
- Short Essays: You have the chance to explain your choice of country, how Fulbright fits into your career path, your cultural preparation, and your teaching preparation (if teaching is chosen) in the essays.
- Letter of Invitation: A letter of invitation from the University of Newcastle is required.
- Language Proficiency Requirements: None, The English language is sufficient.
Those who make the shortlist will receive an invitation to a Zoom interview with an Australian Fulbright Selection Committee.
