The high caliber of education provided by Dutch educational institutions is well known, and tuition costs and the cost of living in the Netherlands are far lower than in many English-speaking nations. There are various scholarship options available in the Netherlands as well.

For those international students who want to study in the Netherlands, below is a list of several scholarships that are offered. Remember that scholarship availability, eligibility requirements, and application dates might change, so always check the official websites for the most recent information.

1. Fully Funded Scholarship at Maastricht University (UM)

The UM Holland High Potential scholarship program is offered by Maastricht University (UM) in the Netherlands, a renowned scholarship provider. Its goal is to persuade particularly talented international students to apply to the university’s master’s degree program.

24 full scholarships worth € 30,000 (including a waiver of tuition fees and a monthly stipend) are given out each academic year by Maastricht University’s UM Holland High Potential Scholarship program to exceptionally talented students from outside the European Union (EU) who have been accepted to UM’s master’s programs.

Applications for the UM Holland High Potential Scholarship Program will become available in October 2023 for the academic year 2024–2025. We’ll make the deadline known later.

2. The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship in the Netherlands

The LExS (Leiden University Excellence Scholarship) is a scholarship program run by Leiden University in the Netherlands. The scholarship is meant to assist deserving international students who wish to enroll in the master’s degree at Leiden University.

The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program provides scholarships in the form of tuition price waivers for the duration of the master’s degree program, ranging from partial to full reimbursement of the tuition fees. The scholarship is awarded for the whole length of the master’s program, which can be anywhere between one and two years, depending on the curriculum.

Applicants must not be citizens of the EEA or EFTA* in order to be eligible for Leiden University Excellence Scholarships provided by the Dutch government (Studiefinanciering), with the exception of those applying to the following programs, for whom there are no nationality restrictions:

  • Each and every program for LLM Advanced Studies
  • MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy

3. HAN University Scholarships for International Students

Non-EU students who wish to register in bachelor’s or master’s degree programs at HAN University may apply for HAN University Scholarships for International Students. The HAN University of Applied Sciences, or HAN for short, is one of the largest applied science universities in the Netherlands. There are bachelor’s and master’s degree programs available to more than 36,000 students.

Normally, applicants for the HAN University Scholarships must be citizens of countries outside of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA).

4. Free University of Amsterdam Scholarships for International Students

For international master’s students who require financial aid, the Free University of Amsterdam (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam) )offers scholarships. A variety of scholarships are available to international Master’s students in order to help them pay for their education. These scholarships are open to applicants from outside the EU/EEA. Some of these scholarships are full tuition fee waivers while others provide partial funding.

5. Leiden University Free Online Courses

Learners from all over the world can access the free online courses offered by Leiden University. There are more than 35 different online courses available at Leiden University. Tens of thousands of students from all around the world have enrolled in each of these Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs).

The best authorities in their disciplines serve as the course instructors. Peer-reviewed assignments and online lectures are produced by them. While completing tests and exchanging ideas on discussion boards, course participants work together in an online global classroom. At the conclusion of a MOOC, a certificate that has been formally verified can be purchased for a modest fee.

6. Radboud University Scholarship Program

The Radboud University Scholarship Program gives bright, driven non-EEA students with stellar academic records the chance to be awarded a scholarship for the whole master’s degree at Radboud University, which is taught entirely in English.

Your tuition will only be €2.530 if you are eligible for a Radboud University Scholarship Program. For instance, a grantee in 2024–2025 will only be required to pay €2.530 toward tuition, as opposed to €17,000 in tuition. The scholarship also covers your health insurance, liability insurance, visa, and residence permit while you are studying in the Netherlands (Aon Student Insurance). The scholarship does not cover living or educational costs for students enrolled at Dutch universities. The NL Scholarship and the Radboud Scholarship can be paired.
