Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the College of Graduate Studies PhD Scholarships, candidates should:
- Hold a master’s degree with a GPA of at least 3.5 out of 4.0.
- Hold no job or other source of income.
- Obtain a dissertation in one of the priority areas (health, water, technology, space, renewable energy, transportation, or health).
- Apply and fulfill the requirements for admission to the PhD program.
The following are the minimal prerequisites for admission to the PhD program:
- a master’s degree in the subject matter or a closely related field from a university certified by the UAE Ministry of Education, or its equivalent, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
- The UAE Ministry of Education recognizes universities that have earned an approved Bachelor’s degree in the topic or a closely related field, with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale or its equivalent.
- A minimum of 6.5 on the IELTS Academic test, or its equivalent, is required for all fields where English is the primary language of instruction or where writing the dissertation is required. Click here to view the permitted testing locations for the TOEFL and IELTS exams. With the following exceptions, this test result must have been taken no more than two years prior to the application:
- Applicants with a Master’s degree from an English-medium institution who can show proof of achieving a minimum IELTS score of 6.0 or its equivalent at the time of admission to their Master’s program, or native English speakers who have completed their Master’s degree in an English-medium institution and in a nation where English is the official language.
- A minimum of 5.0 on the IELTS, or an equivalent score, is needed to be admitted to a PhD program offering where Arabic is the primary language of teaching.
- Admission requirements to the PhD program in each department/college may be further specified by the individual colleges.

Documents/Material Required to Apply
The following needs to be included in the application package:
- a completed application;
- identity documents are needed for overseas students (passport copy) and Emirati students (passport copy and Khulasat Al-Qaid);
- one official transcript and diploma from each university attended, certified copy;
- an official record of the candidate’s IELTS exam or comparable score;
- two recommendation letters from experts who are acquainted with the student’s scholarly work;
- a copy of the applicant’s resume; and a statement in the same language as the program’s official language of instruction detailing the applicant’s research background and interests.
