UBC dedicates more than $30 million annually to awards, scholarships, and other forms of financial support for international undergraduate students in order to recognize the academic achievement of outstanding students from around the world. You will have the chance to develop, connect, conduct research, and innovate while attending one of the top 40 universities in the world and the most international university in North America. Following are the UBC Scholarships and Awards available to international students:

1. International Major Entrance Scholarship

Outstanding international students enrolling in undergraduate programs at UBC are given International Major Entrance Scholarships (IMES). IMES are awarded to students as they begin their first year of study at UBC, and they are renewable for up to three more years of study. Depending on the funding available, these scholarships are awarded at varying levels and numbers each year.

2. Outstanding International Student Award

When qualified applicants are offered admission to UBC, they are given a one-time merit-based entrance scholarship known as the Outstanding International Student Award (OIS Award). Students who are chosen for this award exhibit strong academic performance as well as extracurricular engagement.

Eligibility for UBC Scholarships and Awards for International Students

To be eligible for the IMES, you have to be

  • new to UBC and entering straight out of high school.
  • being an international student who will attend UBC while holding a student visa or study permit from Canada. Your eligibility for the IMES may change if your citizenship status changes.
  • Show intellectual promise and exceptional academic achievement, as well as an outstanding level of extracurricular and community involvement.
  • not be selected for an International Scholars award based on merit and need.

How to Apply

The IMES will be automatically considered for you if you submit your application to UBC by January 15. For more information and to apply, go to the official website.

3. International Scholars Program

The International Scholars Programme at UBC offers four prestigious need-and-merit-based awards. Each year, UBC grants about 50 scholarships across all four categories. High academic achievers who have excelled in extracurricular activities, demonstrated a desire to affect change around the world, and are committed to giving back to their schools and communities are considered international scholars.

i. Karen McKellin International Leader of Tomorrow Award

This honor is given to international undergraduate students who have excelled in the classroom, exhibited exceptional leadership qualities, participated in student government and volunteer work, and demonstrated success in other important areas.

ii. Donald A. Wehrung International Student Award

This award honors exceptional international undergraduate students from underdeveloped or conflict-torn regions who have excelled academically despite difficult circumstances and who would not be able to attend college without substantial financial aid.

iii. International Impact Award

This prize is given to outstanding students who have demonstrated a commitment to and a willingness to find solutions for issues relating to social justice, the environment, equity and inclusion, societal health and wellness, and freedom of expression.

iv. Vantage One Excellence Award

For academically exceptional international students who do not yet meet the English Language Admission Standard for direct admission to UBC, UBC Vantage College offers the Vantage One Excellence Award. The awards come in a variety of amounts that can cover all of a student’s tuition, fees, and living expenses.
